Chorlton Cheap Eats
Chorlton has the best food shops in the city. Home of Frosts the butchers who seem to supply all the best restaurants in Manchester, ditto the fish from Out of the Blue, and nearby deli Barbakan have even made butties for Justin Bieber!
It is very much a drinks led bar scene round here though, with over 20 bars to get real ale. So cheaper places to eat tend to do quite well, and casual dining seems to fit in with peoples lifestyles.
Here are my top five Chorlton Cheap eats.
(Click on the header for the full length reviews).
1. Bar San Juan.
For the size of it, surely this is the most successful restaurant in Chorlton? It's always heaving! They've got the ambience and atmosphere spot on, it feels authentic it's priced fairly, and most importantly the food is spot on and a break from the normal tapas you get in the UK. Now that Manchester Confidential has recently reviewed it favourably, it'll be even more difficult to get a seat. The ones outside on a sunny day are like gold dust.
2. The Nook & Cranny.
Authentic Napoli pizzas for a fiver. Monday's are even better value at half price, even cheaper than a crappy supermarket bought pizza!
3. The Hungry Gecko at The Beech.
Surely the local success story of 2013? Fantastic spicy and inexpensive Asian Street Food at Chorlton's best real ale pub? Yes please. The only problem for me is that sometimes I can't get a seat for 'yummy mummies' with their screaming kids. Will be fantastic on hot summer nights or 'night' singular probably.
4. Pi
If you have a pie without sides you can eat for less than a fiver.
Brilliant pies from Pieminister and a superb selection of beers too.
5. Morley Cheek's.
The best burger in Chorlton is at Parlour, but these guys are giving the latest burger craze a go and it's only £8 with tasty fries. The meat is from local butcher Frosts.
